The top disability lifestyle and travel blogger in the United Kingdom, Emma Muldoon, recently assembled a list of key factors to consider when booking an accessible hotel room as a wheelchair user. Recognizing that 1 in 5 people are disabled, and that disability will affect most people at some point in their lives, she highlights the opportunity for the travel industry, as “the collective spending power of disabled people is called The Purple Pound and is estimated at £274 billion a year.” In order to take advantage of that opportunity, hotels must ensure adequate wheelchair accessibility for disabled guests.

Our Takeaway: Having someone with lived-experience demonstrate the features she doesn’t find often enough in hotel rooms creates awareness and, at the same time, empathy.

What Is the Most Accessible Hotel Chain in America?

April 25, 2023 by rschultz Leave a Comment

As anyone searching for accessible hotel rooms knows, the biggest problem when it comes to consistency is that at least 90 percent of hotels are franchises. This means that though branding stays the same, each location could look nothing alike and have varying levels of accessibility.

Sylvia Longmire, a wheelchair traveler since 2015, has stayed in hundreds of hotels across dozens of countries and states.

Drumroll: To discover which hotel chain best addresses accessibility, read here.

Our Takeaway: There’s something to be said for a standard layout that copies accessibility from franchise to franchise. When there are no surprises for guests, managers have to deal with fewer complaints.

The Schoolhouse Hotel is focused on accessibility for everyone from the moment a guest books a room through its website, all the way through check-out. Learn more about their model and why they’re being celebrated here.

Our Takeaway: The Schoolhouse Hotel serves as a veritable showroom of innovations, products, and technology that makes every room accessible for a wide range of disabilities. Hotel developers should be making pilgrimages to see what’s next.

If you want to experience a hotel from a wheel-chair-users perspective and do an ADA compliance check at the same time, sit down and spend time in a wheelchair as an experiment in what guests with disabilities face.  In 2018, the hotel manager at the Alfond Inn Hotel did just that–with some coaching from Sylvia Longmire, who writes about the accessibility of destinations in her travel blog, Spin the Globe.

Our Takeaway: This simple, educational experiment is a good reminder that there’s no better way to learn than by doing and experiencing a guest’s frustration first-hand. Find out what he learned, here.

While hotel operators mean well, good intentions can end in accidental insults and embarrassment. The key to serving the disability community is a better understanding of guest expectations and respect for their wishes.

Our Takeaway: If we know better, we do better, and we make the guests happier so they tell others.
